Martinez, Contra Costa County
John Muir spent the last twenty-four years of his life in a hilltop Victorian in Martinez, managing the family fruit ranch and writing the books that helped create the national parks. The seventeen-room house is a National Historic Site. Baseball great Joe DiMaggio was born in Martinez in 1914, the son of a fisherman, and the town also claims to be the birthplace of the martini.
